An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Glaucoma to join a well-established ophthalmology service in the East Midlands. The successful candidate will contribute to a comprehensive ophthalmic service, supporting both general and subspecialty care, while playing a key role in service delivery, teaching, and clinical governance within a multidisciplinary environment.
Job Responsibility:
Provide a comprehensive ophthalmology service, including subspecialty care in Glaucoma, across outpatient and surgical settings
Deliver high-volume cataract surgery and support the achievement of service delivery targets, including waiting time standards
Participate in Glaucoma clinics, virtual clinics, and theatre sessions as part of the agreed job plan
Contribute to the ophthalmology on-call rota, providing emergency care and cross-cover for colleagues
Maintain continuing responsibility for patients under your care, ensuring safe and effective clinical management
Support the delivery of ophthalmology services across multiple sites where required
Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of trainees and involvement in educational programmes
Actively engage in clinical audit, governance, and quality improvement initiatives
Attend departmental meetings, multidisciplinary discussions, and governance forums
Report and manage clinical incidents in line with governance frameworks
Contribute to service development, innovation, and departmental management activities
Requirements:
FRCS, FRCOphth, or equivalent qualification
Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology or within 6 months of CCT
Extensive clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with broad exposure across the speciality
Ability to perform high-volume cataract surgery
Experience in clinical audit and quality improvement, including presenting findings
Experience in managing Glaucoma patients within a specialist service
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Demonstrated leadership and team-working capability
Commitment to teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and patient safety principles
IT proficiency and ability to work with electronic patient record systems
Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred ophthalmology services
Ongoing engagement in continuing professional development
Commitment to service modernisation and continuous improvement
Nice to have:
Fellowship or subspecialty training in Glaucoma or related field
Higher degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent)
Evidence of research activity, publications, or case reports
Subspecialty interest that complements existing services
Experience in service development or pathway redesign
Ability to innovate and implement new clinical practices or technologies
Experience in leading service improvements or organisational change
Experience contributing to departmental leadership and management
Ability to support the development of regional or national care pathways
