Job Description:

The Ophthalmic Technician 1 performs skilled duties related to the eye. This position assists the physician and is part of the health care team for ocular health.

Job Responsibility:

  • Initiates and documents the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, medical history, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings accurately
  • Performs testing including visual acuity measurement, lensometry, pupil function testing, ocular motility, tonometry, and confrontation visual field testing
  • Performs refractometry
  • manual manifest refraction to draft preliminary glasses prescription
  • Performs various specialty tests ordered by a physician, such as pachymetry, Brightness Acuity Test (BAT), Potential Acuity Meter (PAM), and color vision testing
  • Assists with minor surgeries, intraocular injections, and laser treatments
  • Prepares patients for sterile procedures in exam or treatment rooms
  • Educates patient regarding the administration of medications, and pre and post operative instructions, as directed by physician
  • Handles specimens, biopsies and culture materials safely
  • Administers topical ophthalmic and oral medications at the direction of a physician
  • Opens and closes exam lanes
  • Ensures equipment is cleaned and disinfected
  • Makes sure battery-powered instruments are seated properly in recharge wells
  • Ensures lamps and projectors are switched off and under covers

Requirements:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED Equivalent
  • Less than 1 Year of Experience
  • Basic understanding of Ophthalmic Care modalities, therapies, terminology, medications and equipment
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills
  • Neat professional appearance
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers, family of patients, doctors, and patients
  • Requires flexibility to handle multiple ongoing tasks
  • Must maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPPA guidelines
  • Basic computer skills, including but not limited to: typing, information security, electronic medical documentation, hand held scanning and email
