Job Description:

Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Oncology Data Specialist to join our remote team. In this full-time role, you will be responsible for accurately abstracting and managing clinical oncology data to support national cancer registry reporting. Your work will directly contribute to advancing cancer care and supporting key quality initiatives across our organization.

Job Responsibility:

  • Accurately abstract and interpret clinical data from patient medical records to identify and record cancer diagnoses
  • Track oncology patient data throughout the full course of care—from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up
  • Input complete, high-quality data into national cancer registries and internal databases
  • Maintain a consistent workflow of abstracting 5 cases per day (25 cases per week) from a provided suspense list
  • Support quality management initiatives in collaboration with Baptist MD Anderson Oncology Leadership
  • Utilize multiple data sources to ensure comprehensive and accurate patient case tracking
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to maintain compliance with cancer reporting standards

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 3-5 Years Medical Records Experience
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) Required
  • Must reside in one of the following states: AL, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, MI, NC, OH, OK, OR, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, WV, WY

  • Review surgical pathology reports (narrative and CAP synoptic) and abstract diagnostic elements including tumor type, primary site, histologic subtype, grade, and stage
  • Serve as liaison and communicate routinely with the pathology/medical team regarding diagnostic clarifications, unusual findings, or incomplete report elements
  • Escalate medical or interpretive questions to an on-premises or remote staff pathologist for confirmation
  • Document all escalations and pathologist, ordering physician feedback within the case record and maintain audit traceability
  • Map diagnoses to the appropriate IHC reflex markers and molecular test bundles using the OncoTree matrix
  • Coordinate accurate entry structured diagnostic data into NeoGenomics databases and laboratory information systems
  • Utilize NIS/LIS, and related databases for data entry, validation, and QC tracking
  • Collaborate with Client Services, IHC Lab, Molecular Operations, and Reporting teams to resolve discrepancies
