The Nurse Manager, with the Director, Obstetrical Nursing, assumes 24-hour responsibility for management of Labor and Delivery and Perinatal Education units, and allocation of resources. Management includes provision of appropriate staffing and skill mix, and sufficient equipment and supplies to meet the nursing care needs of the patient population. This position has administrative and operational responsibilities and participates with the nursing team in care planning and delivery, utilizing the nursing process to provide appropriate comprehensive care, in accordance with the stated philosophy and objectives of the Nursing Service Department and the OB Department.
Job Responsibility
Provision of appropriate staffing and skill mix, and sufficient equipment and supplies to meet the nursing care needs of the patient population
Participates with the nursing team in care planning and delivery, utilizing the nursing process to provide appropriate comprehensive care
Requirements
Requires flexibility and adaptability to ensure unit is staffed appropriately at all times
Assigns personnel, as necessary and in congruence with their skills to optimize patient care
Functions in the role of charge nurse when working clinically
Leading the huddle at the beginning of each shift and reviewing the shift operational plan of care with incoming staff
Maintaining department schedule and time card management of assigned staff
In collaboration with the Director, clinical resource nurse and Nurse Educator, develops standards for care and updates and revises procedures and policies, as necessary
Oversees and maintains RN L&D Nursing, L&D scrub tech and UC Schedules
With the Nurse Director of OB and Nurse Educator, develops and revises procedures and policies in accordance with best practices
In collaboration with the Director and Nurse Manager of Postpartum/SCN, evaluates staff performance based on developed standards
Participates in interview process for hiring of new staff
Utilizes constructive conflict management strategies, just in time coaching and goal setting to optimize staff performance and engagement
Promotes professional development of staff
Participates in the development, monitoring and evaluation of clinical and patient satisfaction initiatives, standards of nursing practice and outcomes of patient care
Represents the organization in a professional manner in communication, attire and interaction with others
In collaboration with the Director and nurse educators, provides staff education on an ongoing basis
Establishes and maintains effective communication in all areas of responsibility
Participates in quality assurance and improvement initiatives and engages staff to participate in audit activities and action plan implementation
Orients or delegates responsibility for orientation of personnel and works with the nurse educator to assess successful acquisition of positional competence
Assumes responsibility with the Director, Obstetrical Nursing for optimal maintenance and utilization of supplies and equipment
Maintains and supports patients rights to care, privacy and respect
Provides and/or assists in direct patient care
Participates in hospital committees and programs, as appropriate
Serves as OB Dept Dayshift Charge RN on other duty days and partners with clinical resource nurses to support operations which include weekends and holidays
