The role is accountable for the reliable delivery of engineering-led services across multiple customer and stakeholder groups within a matrix organisation. The role blends service delivery, operational management, and engineering execution, ensuring services meet customer expectations, regulatory requirements, and are scalable and continuously improving. The BNS team are seeking a Nuclear Engineering Operations Manager to lead a small team of engineers and scientists. This role acts as a key leader, integrating engineering, operations and service deliverables, translating strategic goals into effective delivery and day-to-day operational outcomes. The role demands strong leadership, a commitment to best practice, and a focus on developing high-performing teams that deliver consistently excellent results.
Job Responsibility:
People management – leading a small team of engineers and scientists managing performance, development and capability
Coach and mentor team members and delivery partners in operational excellence
Drive a culture of continuous improvement, learning from incidents and delivery outcomes
Champion customer-centric thinking and outcome-focused delivery
Work alongside the Project Management Office to ensure accuracy in planning and forecasting for area of responsibility
Provide nuclear engineering and safety case support to projects, contracts, and operational teams across IA&R
Support the customer with technical advice, problem-solving, and assurance
Ensure engineering standards, quality, and security requirements are met
Manage performance and deliverables to drive improvements in quality and efficiency
Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with customers in the defence nuclear industry, regulated entities, and external partners
Define, track, and report on KPIs, and operational health metrics
Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams in IA&R and across the wider Amentum teams
Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders
Contribute to knowledge sharing, technical forums, and best practice development
Support mentoring and development of graduate and early-career engineers where appropriate
Requirements:
Technical competence and experience in Engineering or Science. Demonstrated through Engineering or Scientific Degree
Experience managing individual performance and delivering measurable improvements in quality and efficiency
Significant experience working in a nuclear engineering / science role
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and strategic thinking abilities
Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety, and quality requirements. An ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments, based upon knowledge and understanding and communicate the findings effectively
Ability to work effectively across a matrix organisation
Ability to clearly communicate with customers and stakeholders both verbally and in written form
Hold or working towards discipline Chartership
