The Australian Services Union (ASU) is seeking a National Industrial Officer to work in the Union’s National Office. The ASU is a large and growing union, with more than 135,000 members working in airlines, social and community services, professional administration, local government, energy, transport, and a range of other industry sectors. As a member of our high-performing National Industrial Team you will work with our branch leaders, staff and members on bargaining campaigns, industrial disputes, award matters and other campaigns. You will work collaboratively with other National Office staff to deliver advice, advocacy and strategic thinking to the ASU branches. The job will involve occasional interstate travel.
Job Responsibility:
Developing and implementing strategies in enterprise bargaining, award matters and other industrial activities to improve pay and conditions for members and membership growth
Representing the ASU before the Fair Work Commission and other bodies
Providing guidance, and technical advice to ASU elected officials and staff that is accurate, timely and reflects ASU strategy
Assisting in developing and implementing industrial plans for the ASU
Implementing action plans developed by the National Industry Committees and/or the National Executive, in conjunction with the Assistant National Secretary
Proactively consulting and communicating with ASU elected officials and staff around the country to ensure that all stakeholders are committed to and informed of the development, implementation and delivery of industrial strategy
Creating written industrial communications for ASU industrial and campaign activities that are accurate, engaging, and consistent with ASU strategy or policy
Undertake other tasks as directed by the Assistant National Secretary and/or the National Industrial Director
Requirements:
Demonstrated success in creating and implementing industrial and/or growth strategies for enterprise bargaining, award matters or other industrial activities
Demonstrated success in written and oral advocacy before the Fair Work Commission and/or other bodies
Considerable knowledge of the industrial relations processes, current issues, practices and policies for the assigned area, including the Fair Work Act
High level of negotiations skills
Considerable knowledge of industrial legislation, employment law, relevant awards, and relevant enterprise agreements
Ability to work independently without supervision, but also as a member of a team
Ability to prioritise competing deliverables and objectives in a busy and dynamic work environment
A strong ability to exercise initiative, innovation and independent judgement to solve problems
Commitment to the principles of the Australian union movement and social justice
An understanding of the ASU and support for the ASU’s principles, policies and decision-making process
