The Music Therapist will be responsible for evaluating, planning and providing music therapy treatment to students with disabilities in accordance with written prescription or policy. The incumbent works with individuals or small groups of children. This position involves no responsibility for teaching or course curriculum development. The therapy is individualized to the needs of children through evaluation and assessment. Administrative direction is received from the Principal and Supervisor of Itinerant Services or the Director of Exceptional and Alternative Education. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. The incumbent performs related work as required.
Job Responsibility:
Performs music therapy practices with students with disabilities utilizing a creative music expression which may be manual or emotional to aid in supporting student progress toward their goals
Maintains records on students’ evaluations, re-evaluations, progress notes, consultations and treatment summaries
Participates with other staff personnel in the formulation of students’ total therapeutic plan
Develops or assists in the development of district music therapy policies and procedures
Develops a written music therapy prescription to be incorporated into the individualized educational plan for each student to receive therapy services
Develops and applies music expression and movement techniques to aid students in achieving maximum independence
Aids students’ expressive and receptive skills, which enhance creativity and imagination
Uses music therapy to effect behavior change in students
Uses music therapy to encourage self-actualization and communication
Participates in parent and teacher conferences relative to music therapy procedures
Plans the music therapy program following review of each student’s needs to achieve improvement in creativity and imagination
Establishes and maintains communications with physicians and community agencies working with the students
Performs other related duties as required
Requirements:
Must be Civil Service eligible
Possession of a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF: the principles, techniques and practices of music therapy
good musical instrumentation and equipment used in music therapy
community resources available to support or supplement the music therapy program
ABILITY TO: evaluate, plan and execute music therapy treatments for students
ability to get along well with others
