MRC, formally known as the Midlands Reading Consortium, is a signature initiative of United Way of the Midlands (UWM), that supplements and ignites a love of reading and STEM for prekindergarten – third grade students. The program offers five unique volunteer opportunities: one-on-one reading sessions, classroom reading sessions, family engagement night events, STEM activity coordination, and STEM Girls Support. MRC is a partnership between United Way of the Midlands, school districts within UWM’s 6-county footprint, local colleges, universities, and community partners serving over 1,000 children each year. The MRC Volunteer Coordinator ensures that volunteers are properly recruited, trained, and actively participating in MRC activities. The coordinator is also responsible for planning and facilitating MRC volunteer workshops in support of MRC’s literacy and STEM goals.
Job Responsibility:
Lead MRC’s in-school and afterschool volunteer recruitment efforts for literacy and STEM initiatives
Identify and sustain volunteer pipelines through multiple touch points at local schools and employers
Develop relationships with each partner school's PTO/PTA and SIC
Research and implement current best practices for volunteer recruitment
Develop and document an annual strategic plan to be shared with the MRC team during planning season that identifies a specific timeline, cross departmental collaborations, and communication needs for recruitment to ensure program, department and organizational goals for MRC are met or exceeded
Develop mutually beneficial relationships with representatives from universities, high schools, nonprofits, and community groups to advance MRC’s visibility
Work with Resource Development and Communications staff to develop content for social media, newsletters, annual reports, etc.
Partner with the MRC Volunteer Manager to ensure synergy between the volunteer recruitment, screening, and management processes
Maintain volunteer recruitment records including leads, timelines and calls to action
Coordinate and facilitate MRC’s annual volunteer and teacher appreciation event
Coordinate and facilitate MRC’s episodic (one-off) volunteer opportunities including but not limited to classroom readings, packing parties, distribution of teacher appreciation gifts approximately twice a quarter
Work collaboratively with Volunteer Center staff to post and monitor episodic (one-off) volunteer opportunities
Lead content creation collaborations for MRC Literacy & STEM focused holidays to create social media/marketing content with support from MRC Volunteer Manager, MRC Director, and Communications team
Complete the student enrollment process for all students served by MRC long-term programming. This includes collecting parent consent forms, entering their demographic information into the system, confirming a student ID number and communicating updates to the Volunteer Manager
Track volunteer hours and engagement for all volunteer opportunities via tracking session forms or sign in sheets for long-term commitment and registration check-ins for one-off
Work collaboratively with Volunteer Center Staff to monitor volunteer data for episodic volunteer opportunities
Track and celebrate volunteer milestones to foster relationships and enhance stewardship
Maintain quality data to share with the MRC Volunteer Manager monthly including hours, attendance, scope of work, etc.
Lead collaboration with partner school counselors, Resource Development staff, and engagement network volunteers to assist with the Resiliency Kit drive
Act as support to other MRC staff leads with additional drives including Be a Book Bunny and Ready Set Supply
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
One to two years of working in the educational and/or youth focused arena
Volunteer coordination skills and experience
Organizational skills
