Job Responsibility

Performs medium to high complexity Microbiology testing procedures
Assures integrity of specimens during all phases of testing
Performs various slide preparations and staining techniques
Maintains complete documentation/competency for all steps of processes
Analyzes, interprets, and records patient test results into the electronic medical record
Interprets complex susceptibility patterns to determine antibiotic resistance patterns
Performs Quality Control processes
Responsible for proper compliance and maintenance of respiratory PPE
Participates in the training of other technologists, students, resident physicians, pharmacy technicians and Infectious Disease nurses
Takes part in annual education pertaining to select microbiological agents and/or emerging pathogens

Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist
Graduation from a recognized diploma program in Medical Laboratory Technology
Completion of microbiology related courses within the last two years or one (1) year recent, related experience within the last six years in the microbiology section of the laboratory, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT, MLS, CLT, CLS) by the Board of Registry as ASCP, AMT, AAB (AAB with 15yrs.experience), NCA, HHS certification or equivalent
Must be a High School or GED Diploma Graduate
Baccalaureate degree from accredited college or university to include minimum of 30 quarter hours of lecture science, including at least 15 quarter hours of chemistry, 10 quarter hours of biology and 5 quarter hours of math
Works in a fast-paced clinical environment
Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards
