As a Metallurgist at Newmont, you will be instrumental in optimising metallurgical performance, supporting safe and efficient processing operations, and ensuring we maximise value from every tonne processed. Your work will directly influence gold recovery, plant stability, and continual improvement across our processing systems.
Job Responsibility:
Provide technical support and troubleshooting for metallurgical and processing site operations
Collaborate with geology, mining, maintenance, plant operations and other key operational teams to resolve operational challenges
Contribute to process improvement initiatives and the deployment of new technologies
Deliver accurate metallurgical analysis, reporting, plant surveys, testwork programs and plant equipment inspections
Coach, mentor, and support colleagues and graduate metallurgists to build team capability
Uphold Newmont’s safety values through visible leadership, Critical Control Verifications, and proactive risk management
Identify cost‑reduction opportunities and minimise waste within the processing value chain
Ensure compliance with the PNG Mine Safety Act, Newmont Safety Systems, Environmental policies, and departmental procedures
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or similar
Postgraduate qualification is desirable
A PNG Class 6 driver’s licence is required
Site‑based metallurgical experience in a large-scale mining environment
Strong understanding of metallurgical testwork, sample preparation, comminution, hydrometallurgy, mineral processing, and metallurgical accounting
Experience across key processing areas including ore blending, crushing, milling, flotation, thickening, pressure oxidation, CCD washing, CIL, AARL elution, electrowinning, lime slaking, process control and metallurgical accounting
Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and interpret plant trials, metallurgical surveys, and laboratory testwork
Proficiency in PI Process Book (or similar) and MS Office Suite
Ability to analyse, interpret, and present metallurgical data effectively to stakeholders at all levels
Proven capability in reviewing and updating technical documents, including SOPs and MSDS
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Strong attention to detail, planning capability, and problem‑solving skills
