The mental health therapist assigned to the Strong Minds Clinic is responsible for providing psychosocial assessment and treatment to individuals ages 16 and older who are severely and persistently mentally ill and may have a co-occurring substance use disorder. Services are provided through participation on an interdisciplinary team designed to provide comprehensive community based psychiatric care. The mental health therapist functions as primary therapist for assigned patients and provides direct clinical service including individual and family therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, and community outreach.
Job Responsibility:
Provides direct clinical services to assigned patients, which may involve individual, family, and/or group therapy, crisis intervention, and diagnostic evaluations
Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary team involving consultation, treatment planning, and periodic care review
Documents interventions, both direct and indirect, in the patient’s medical record in compliance with the Division, Department, and Hospital policy. Ensures timely completion of statistical reports/forms
Collaborates with family, social supports, community agencies (past and present) to ensure appropriate and effective care
Coordinates referrals and facilitates linkage to other appropriate agencies/supports
Attends Division, Department, and Clinic level staff meetings
Ensures that Division, Department, and Clinic policies and procedures are implemented with regard to professional practice and patient care
Timely completion of time sheets, and other Hospital or Division mandatory in-service trainings and Health Assessments
Subscribes to maintaining a culturally competent environment by treating patient, families, trainees, and co-workers in a sensitive manner with appropriate attention to cultural differences
Participates in available cultural competency events and training appropriate to job duties
Develops and leads groups for patients (and possibly family members or their support network) which focuses on issues and needs of the mentally ill population
Provides back-up coverage for patient care, as appropriate and requested
Other duties as assigned Maintains professional CEU requirements by reading, attending seminars, workshops and conferences
Requirements:
Master's degree from a Counsel for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) accredited program with major course work in mental health counseling
Prior experience working with individuals with mental illness and/or community mental health
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience with adolescent/young adults
Knowledge of mental illness
Ability to engage in person centered treatment
Knowledge/skills in various therapeutic interventions including CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing
Knowledge of risk evaluation and mitigation
NYS licensure as a mental health practitioner (e.g., Mental Health Counselor, Creative Arts Therapist) upon hire required
If licensure has not been obtained upon employment, an active limited permit or submitted application to the NYS Department of Education. upon hire required
NYS licensure as a mental health practitioner (e.g., Mental Health Counselor, Creative Arts Therapist) within 36 months required
