We are hiring a Member of Technical Staff, Microsoft Robotics (Field Robotics) at the hardware engineer II level, to plan, execute, and analyze field tests of robotic systems across real-world deployment environments. This role serves as the critical bridge between laboratory development and production readiness, ensuring that robots, AI models, and platform software and interfaces perform reliably under real operating conditions. The engineer will deploy robots to customer and partner sites, design and execute structured test protocols, collect performance and telemetry data, diagnose field issues, and gather and implement actionable feedback, and work with engineering teams to drive continuous improvement of hardware, software, and AI capabilities.

Job Responsibility

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute field test campaigns for robotic systems across diverse real-world environments, including customer sites, partner facilities, and first-party scenarios, ranging from indoor semi-structured settings to unstructured outdoor terrains, that replicate operational conditions
  • Develop and maintain structured field test protocols, acceptance criteria, data collection procedures, and reporting templates that ensure repeatable, measurable evaluation of robot hardware, software, and AI model performance
  • Deploy, configure, and operate robotic platforms in the field, including hardware setup, software provisioning, network configuration, sensor calibration, and integration with site-specific infrastructure
  • Collect, organize, and analyze field test data including sensor logs, telemetry streams, performance metrics, video recordings, and environmental measurements, producing clear and actionable test reports for engineering and program leadership
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot field issues across the full robot stack (mechanical, electrical, software, networking, AI behavior), performing initial root cause analysis and resolving complex issues alongside engineering teams with well-documented reproduction steps
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers, software engineers, AI researchers, and program managers to communicate and integrate field findings, prioritize bug fixes and design improvements, and validate engineering changes through follow-up field testing
  • Identify and provide feedback on process gaps in field deployment and test procedures, sharing best practices broadly across the team and contributing to continuous improvement of field operations readiness
  • Maintain detailed documentation around field deployment procedures, site-specific configurations, inventory management, and service support workflows
  • Participate in test triage and review meetings to share knowledge, actively contribute to faster issue resolution, and identify readiness needs for upcoming field campaigns
  • Assist in the development of end-to-end readiness programs, including mentoring, knowledge sharing, technical document creation, and development of field operations training materials

  • Proficient with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Maximo experience preferred
  • Strong electro-mechanical skills, with the ability to perform preventive maintenance tasks including cleaning, lubrication, tolerance checks, current measurements, and electrical system inspections
  • Capable of working independently and following established maintenance procedures and technical manuals

  • Lead and execute Symbotic’s maintenance program by training, delegating, and holding maintenance technicians and leads accountable
  • Supervise maintenance staff by assigning tasks, managing schedules, and overseeing day-to-day activities
  • Coach maintenance team members and support their professional development and performance growth
  • Plan, schedule, and monitor timely completion of maintenance work orders and related tasks
  • Actively pursue opportunities to reduce equipment downtime and improve production reliability
  • Identify and implement initiatives to reduce waste and operating costs across maintenance operations
  • Apply continuous improvement and operational excellence practices, including root cause analysis and corrective action related to equipment failures
  • Ensure daily compliance with OSHA, Symbotic, and customer safety procedures and commitments
  • Troubleshoot complex issues and guide the team in effective problem solving
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to maintenance activities
