Job Description

Applications are invited for the position of: Medical Laboratory Assistant. A vacancy has arisen within the Laboratory Department for the position of Medical Laboratory Assistant in Specimen Reception/Microbiology. This is a permanent full-time role, 37 hours per week.

Job Responsibility

  • Assist laboratory staff with pre-sample analysis of blood specimens
  • Set up of Microbiological specimens
  • Prepare and use equipment as directed by appropriate scientific/ technical laboratory staff
  • Receive and record specimens on LIS, ensuring that samples and request forms are correctly matched
  • File and store samples as required and maintain records
  • Scanning, archiving and retrieval of documents
  • Dispatch and delivery of specimens to referral laboratories as required
  • Management of laboratory waste
  • Cleaning of laboratory and laboratory equipment as required
  • Stock management - reporting stock shortages to senior laboratory staff and requesting stocks as appropriate
  • Assisting with filing of specimens, slides etc
  • Taking, recording and delivering phone messages as required
  • Recording of data on the laboratory/hospital computer system to include: patient data entry
  • production of bar-coded labels
  • Completion of daily check lists
  • Other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Hospital.

Requirements

  • Relevant Scientific Qualification (BSc in Biomedical or related Science) - desirable
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Professional approach to work
  • Good communication, organisational and team skills
  • Flexibility in work practice – this role will involve working weekend hours.
