Job Description:

Baptist Health is looking to add a highly motivated and skilled Medical Laboratory Assistant II to join our team working at Baptist Medical Center Clay. This is a full-time day shift opportunity in Phlebotomy and Specimen Processing. The shift will be Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm. This candidate should have excellent customer service skills, as they will be working face-to-face with patients and other medical professionals daily. This Medical Laboratory Assistant is a multiskilled individual who may assist with specimen collection and processing, computer registration, order entry, computer accessioning and specimen distribution.

Job Responsibility:

  • Performing the duties of a phlebotomist in an outpatient laboratory setting
  • Utilizing computer systems in the processing of laboratory specimens
  • Retrieving specimens from pneumatic tube system and processes specimens according to specimen type
  • Distributing specimens to different areas of the laboratory
  • Coordinating specimen pick-ups for referral testing
  • Preparing specimen transfer lists and packages specimens in accordance with laboratory policy for transport

  • Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, pre-approved care algorithms, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services
  • Refers questions to Registered Nurse and Physicians/APP per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed
  • Communicates with Physician/APP and other members of the health care team to ensure smooth clinic flow and adjusts as necessary
  • Effectively communicates accurate and timely information with the patient
  • Performs basic and advanced clinical tasks or skills based on the specialty skills and competencies such as but not limited to removal of sutures and staples, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen), phlebotomy - butterfly, venous heel stick, EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, prescription refills using approved protocols, etc., under clinical supervision
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures
