The Mechanical Engineer: Prototype Build Manager role at Meta Reality Labs helps bring new prototype hardware to life through internal, small-scale device builds within internal labs. This role is responsible for taking a design from partner hardware teams and turning it into reality. This position provides design feedback that aims to improve manufacturability, creates a detailed process flow for assembly and validation, and troubleshoots issues as they arise during the build. The team this role will be joining supports many of Meta’s current and future hardware products, presenting wide-ranging challenges and opportunities for growth.
Job Responsibility:
Translate designs (schematics, CAD, functional requirements) into an assembly process flow
Partner with EE, PD and SW design teams to build the first article of a given prototype, including mechanical assembly and functional test procedure verification
Generate detailed work/assembly/test instructions that inform the team’s contract labor force as they move through the assembly process, ensuring a process that is repeatable and aimed at realizing design intent
Troubleshoot assembly issues as they arise and taking corrective action as appropriate in order to keep the build on schedule
Communicate with designers responsible for a given prototype—both proactively in order to drive design improvements before the build, and reactively to solve issues slowing progress
Support the day-to-day work of the technician workforce, helping them interpret work instructions, making calls on priorities in partnership with the team’s project managers and engineers, and spotting opportunities to improve the speed or quality of work
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field
4+ years of experience in a mix of product-focused mechanical engineering and precision manufacturing/prototyping
Experience with CAD software packages, such as NX or Solidworks, to perform analysis, design and interpretation of technical drawings, schematics, and assemblies
Experience designing fixtures and assembly aids for a prototype environment
Familiarity with standard shop tools and equipment, manual and CNC machine operations and 3D print technologies
Experience identifying operational and manufacturing technology risks, developing plans to mitigate and drive issues to closure, using data analysis tools where appropriate
Experience explaining technical problems with data and analysis and providing feedback and solutions
Experience coaching, mentoring, and training others
Experience collaborating in a team environment with cross-functional teams such system engineering, architecture, product design, New Product Introduction (NPI) and research in fast-paced environments where deliverables may change or are not well defined
Nice to have:
Background in Consumer Electronics and/or mass production environments
6+ years of experience in a combination of electro-optical device engineering, precision manufacturing in a development environment, and building NPI manufacturing lines
Experience with use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, or function generators, for board and system level validation and debugging experience
Experience working with programming languages like Python or C/C++ and using Android Debug Bridge (ADB) commands
Experience with system-level mechanical design including system bring-up, integration, and debug with complex integrated electromechanical assemblies
Experience mentoring other engineers, and building an engineering or manufacturing team, with an understanding of interpersonal relationships and employee growth
Experience leading and influencing across domains and steering technical decisions through communication to peers and organizational leadership
