The Fire Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled mechanical diagnostics, maintenance, and repair on the Fire Department’s full fleet of apparatus, vehicles, and specialized equipment. This includes fire engines, ladder trucks, diesel engines, centrifugal pumps, hydraulic and electrical systems, rescue boats, small engines, and other mission‑critical fire equipment. The role conducts comprehensive overhaul and repair work on components such as transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, suspension, and electrical systems, while also supporting the department’s preventative maintenance program. This position ensures the operational readiness, reliability, and life‑safety performance of all fire apparatus in accordance with applicable standards and manufacturer specifications. This position is required to respond to snow and ice events, including repair and maintenance of vehicles during a snow or ice event and plowing as needed. This position reports to the Fire Chief/Deputy Chief. Work is performed primarily in a shop environment with periodic field work and exposure to outdoor and adverse conditions.
