This role provides materials expertise and testing services for new product development, product cost reductions, manufacturing plant transfers and other types of projects that require materials testing services.
Job Responsibility:
Participate in project team efforts, including collaboration with other functions such as design engineering, project management, operations, purchasing and material planning
Assist in the documentation of product requirements based on industry standards
Develop material evaluation test procedures and schedules
If necessary, develop test fixtures and test software
If necessary, specify and acquire new test equipment
Perform measurement systems analysis
Submit lab requests, schedule testing resources and provide technical support and work direction to technicians performing tests
Provide regular feedback to product development teams on progress and results of testing
Perform failure analysis
Write test reports documenting the results of testing
Review and approve product design and engineering change documentation for conformance to company, customer, agency and industry specifications and standards
Develop awareness of corporate, business unit and lab quality management system documentation
Develop awareness of relevant industry standards for fiber optic products
Develop awareness of the range of lab test equipment
Develop knowledge of polymeric material principles and evaluation techniques
Develop knowledge of fiber optic products and technical principles
Develop knowledge of engineering tools such as LEAN and/or 6-sigma, DMAIC or another improvement process, DoE, FMEA, MSA, and uncertainty
Possibility for travel potentially to international locations
Collaboration with other engineers and technicians in a team-oriented environment
Work with a variety of material types, covering polymers, metals and ceramics
Requirements:
Completed bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering or Chemical Engineering
Solid communication skills, including excellent writing skills and fluency in English
Strong test method and report writing skills
Ability to effectively work within a team environment
Familiarization with the following materials characterization techniques: DSC, DMA, FTIR, TGA, and SEM/EDS
Polymer melt processing knowledge in extrusion and injection molding, as well as evaluation techniques such as melt flow index
Detailed knowledge and experience with impact testing, specifically notched Izod
Nice to have:
Experience with the design/test of polymeric materials per international and domestic industry standards
Skilled at planning and the ability to pay attention to details
Independent, motivated, organized and resourceful with excellent communication and skills to work with maximum effectiveness within a team
