Job Description

As a key member of the Materials Group, you’ll take a lead role in supporting the procurement and evaluation of seals, polymers and lubricants, ensuring safe and reliable construction and operation. You’ll help the nuclear fleet proactively manage in‑service degradation and obsolescence risks across the full asset lifecycle.

Job Responsibility

  • Advising on performance of polymeric materials, sealing systems and lubricants to prevent failures or mitigate degradation mechanisms
  • Selecting, specifying and testing new or replacement materials and systems, including identifying modern equivalents
  • Providing and maintaining guidance and standards for the nuclear fleet
  • Examining in‑situ or ex‑service components to investigate performance and defects
  • Delivering desktop assessments, laboratory testing/analysis and site‑based investigations to support the above activities

Requirements

  • A degree in Materials Science, Chemistry or a related subject, with in‑depth experience of seals, polymers and lubricants
  • Higher‑level qualifications or professional accreditation are advantageous
  • Experience solving materials‑related problems in operational or production‑focused industrial environments
  • Experience in nuclear, energy, aerospace, automotive or regulated industries is beneficial
  • Several years of relevant experience, with the ability to make risk‑informed judgements balancing safety and commercial considerations
  • A questioning attitude, strong teamwork skills and the ability to produce clear, high‑quality technical reports

  • Preparing durability assessments which involves identifying potential deterioration mechanisms of structural elements and other construction products and developing solutions to ensure the structure will achieve its design life
  • Providing support to internal and external clients on the selection, specification, performance, deterioration and repair of materials in structures and for general construction uses
  • Planning and carrying out investigations to evaluate the current condition, performance and residual life of a wide range of existing structures
