Sound provides an exciting opportunity to reduce cognitive load by fully utilizing the senses of a human operator. With an ever increasing access to data, what information can be presented as sound as well as how needs to be researched. Research is to understand when and how sound might complement visual feedback separately, or combine with it. The study might explore topics from alerts (Earcons) to direct translation of raw sensor data to sound (Parameter Mapping). The actual focus of the study may be tailored to the applicant depending on interest and experience, with the the end goal to utilize sound for increased situation awareness, usability and better decision-making. The chosen topic might be researched through literature review, research-through-design, user studies and prototyping at varying levels of fidelity.
