Job Description:

Marine Surveyor (Plan Approval Surveyor): Bureau Veritas Marine, Inc. (Houston, TX) seeks Marine Surveyor (Plan Approval Surveyor) to review and validate drawings and calculations of marine and offshore machinery systems and equipment within the limits of the applicable rules, regulations, and plan approval office delegations. Provide technical support to local Surveyors and Ship-owners within the context of the applicable Class Rules and Statutory Regulations. Provide technical support in matters related to BV Rules and Regulations (BV Quality System, Code of Ethics, and BV Group policy), National or International Regulations, and occupational health, safety, and welfare policies. Support continuous development of review and validation procedures. Attend meetings and workshops with clients. Prepare reports, time-sheets, account details and other information for further processing.

Job Responsibility:

  • Review and validate drawings and calculations of marine and offshore machinery systems and equipment within the limits of the applicable rules, regulations, and plan approval office delegations
  • Provide technical support to local Surveyors and Ship-owners within the context of the applicable Class Rules and Statutory Regulations

Requirements:

Master's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a closely-related field, and two (2) years of experience in the marine industry, which must include application of the following: review and validate marine systems and equipment technology in shipping for commercial vessels and offshore units. Apply common marine vessel industry regulations and standards, International Maritime Organization (IMO) such as: the Internation Convention for the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS), the Internation Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the Internation Convention on Load Lines (ICLL), the International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code), the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code) and classification society rules for commercial vessels and offshore units. Analyze and apply the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) standards, unified interpretations (UI) and unified requirements (UR), to cargo-carrying and passengers ships.

  • Responsible and oversee plan approval activities in Canada and U.S. Main point of contact with clients and external stakeholders (USCG, Transport Canada, engineering companies, etc.) for plan approval (PA) related issues and questions, as directed by the Client Technical Service (CTS) Manager. Compile and issue quotations for Local Plan Office (LPO) services – all disciplines (Hull, Machinery, Electricity/Automation, Fire & Safety, Stability) – in collaboration & cooperation with the North America Commercial Team. Develop strategy and action plan to work towards UPO independence to serve North America market needs without reliance on LPO network (to maximum extent allowable) – including design and implementation for necessary surveyor training & development, as driven by market segment growth. Daily management for the UPO team – procedures, tools, lean management, visual management, information, internal reporting, incl. necessary interactions and meetings with Head Office (HO) and the global Bureau Veritas network. Support the PA activity of other LPOs, when requested, and manage subcontracting within the LPO network for jobs outside UPO’s delegations. Oversee and manage UPO team qualifications according to internal quality procedures, qualifications, activity & report monitoring, etc. Attend internal and external meetings and workshops in connection with design review across all disciplines. Collaborate and support the North America Commercial Team with client PA-related inquiries and engage with client meetings/calls as required. Prepare and manage internal and external audits of UPO, address any non- conformities and implement corrective actions.
