The Surety Engineering Group II is seeking a proactive and skilled Manager for R&D Science and Engineering. This leadership role is pivotal in directing a team of Surety System Engineers who are responsible for developing and implementing innovative strategies aimed at successful product prototyping, qualification, and realization.
Job Responsibility:
Lead and Integrate: Guide your team as they collaborate across multiple enterprises, ensuring the seamless integration of multidisciplinary technology areas to enhance project outcomes
Mentor and Empower: Foster a culture of critical thinking by mentoring staff to identify, assess, and mitigate risks. You will promote the practical application of defect prevention strategies to ensure the development of safe, reliable, and robust products
Drive Initiatives: Influence cross-cut technology areas and contribute to corporate initiatives, such as the Common Engineering Environment Technical Quality pillar, addressing challenges from components to subsystems and entire systems
Collaborate Across the Labs: Work closely with peers and partners throughout Sandia National Laboratories and the broader Nuclear Security Enterprise community, including all eight sites and the NNSA, to ensure cohesive project execution
Engage in Team Dynamics: Be an integral part of a diverse team of ten cohesive departments, collaborating on coordinated hiring and responding swiftly to emerging technical issues. Our leadership team is committed to a prevention and service ethos, with a strong focus on staff development
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
Active DOE Q-level (or DOD equivalent) security clearance required to start
Nice to have:
Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience
A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.)
Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation
Ability to obtain and maintain Sigma 14 and Sigma 15 access
Management experience in an R&D organization and/or Nuclear Deterrence technical leadership experience
Leading and managing R&D engineering projects through complexity, exercising flexibility and technical discernment
Experience and success in recruiting, hiring, mentoring and leading technical staff
Demonstrated ability to deliver results and effectively lead/guide multidisciplinary teams engaged in visionary, groundbreaking work
Influencing technical decisions and delivery without direct authority
Set accountability, managing conflict, eliciting solutions
The ability to build strong, trust-based teaming relationships with peers, customers, and partners with different needs and agendas
Identifying and reducing technical risk in a high-consequence environment
experience applying risk-based approaches to evaluate rigor level of product qualification activities

the ability to anticipate and resolve ambiguous and contentious issues with differing technical points of view through crucial conversations
Experience in systems engineering principles and practices, with a strong understanding of the product realization lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, and deployment of complex systems
Implementing R&D surety engineering principles, tools, methodologies, and best direction
Understanding of the development and execution of qualification plans, requirements maps, test plans, and measurement assurance plans
An ability to solve sophisticated technical problems in the absence of clear direction (experience in ambiguous environments)
An ability to understand and evaluate diverse and incomplete data sets and draw appropriate engineering conclusions
