Job Description:

This role will provide tactical and strategic direction for the organization and will sit on the Management Team for Panoli/India. This position will be the interface between the EHSS&S and the overall Panoli organization. Furthermore, the Manager will coordinate countrywide with stake holders to create new environmental, health and safety, security and sustainability standard operating procedures (SOP), where necessary, and maintain existing SOPs in accordance with the company-wide leadership team for EHSS&S. Functions as the Lead Auditor for the Indian organization. The position will be based at the chemical manufacturing site of Panoli. A close interaction with the Panoli site management is an essential part of this position. The position includes leading direct reports in the EHSS&S Team at the Panoli site.

Job Responsibility:

  • Leads and develops topics in accordance with the Environmental, Health, Safety, Security, and Sustainability (EHSSS&S) organisation for India
  • Responsible for legal site compliance
  • Oversees the development and execution of health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
  • Evaluates practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law
  • Monitors compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
  • Manages EHSS&S operations in Panoli and occasionally other Indian sites
  • Manages Third Party EHSS&S external consultants
  • Manages safety impact assessment, filing emergency response planning and ensures that the all India site operates in accordance with applicable regulations related to safety and fire control
  • Manages environmental impact assessment and ensures that the all India sites operates in accordance with applicable regulations related to the environment
  • Manages hazardous waste programs and ensures that hazardous waste is stored and transported in accordance with applicable rules
  • Ensures that associates who handle hazardous waste are trained in accordance with applicable rules
  • Serves as EHSS&S point of contact for government, customer and internal safety audits
  • Supports introduction and monitoring of full-spectrum EHS processes for all Avantor businesses, including Manufacturing, Production, Distribution, Analysis Laboratories and Services
  • Consults on risk assessments (planning, implementation, operation)
  • Supports occupational health checks of new employees for India
  • Manages incident investigations
  • Conducts trainings and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention
  • Recommends solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
  • Collects, evaluates, and documents best practices company-wide and introduces them as appropriate for regional and international business operations
  • Develops, maintains and coordinates the (standardized) Audit program
  • Develops, maintains, and coordinates the audit set-up for all off-site processes regarding internal Avantor procedures
  • Cultivates a strong safety management culture, including the development and enforcement of policies
  • Works with all functional areas to drive standardization, improve efficiency, and reduce injury rates
  • Supports the Security organization to assess the security risks of the operations
  • Supports the Head of EHSS&S to drive improvement by developing and providing leadership, training, and resources for EHSS&S
  • Works closely with Site EHSS&S Managers and Associates, the site management and the EHSS&S management to support environmentally friendly, sustainable and socially responsible behaviour
  • Supports the EHSS&S organisation to collaborate with cross-functional teams and plan for and respond to emergencies, including labour interruptions, pandemics and other business interruptions
  • Interacts with the EHSS&S Leadership Team to advise necessary continuous improvement efforts so that systems and processes are in line with overall company strategy, quality policy, Federal, State, and Local regulations
  • Oversees the introduction of new IT systems for EHSS&S purposes, closely coordinating with other Avantor organisations, to streamline workflows and maintain “corporate memory” for best practices and SOPs in that area

Requirements:

  • Science background (preferred)
  • 15–16 years of overall professional experience
  • Minimum 10 years of people management experience
  • Qualification according to Indian Law
  • Diploma in Industrial Safety, certified by technical examination board, Gandhinagar & certificate course in Environment Engineering
  • Minimum of 8 years of management and site experience within a global, matrix organisation in a similar role
  • Languages: Hindi, Gujarati, English negotiation grade, any other Indian or Asian language is a bonus
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, production, distribution, analysis laboratories and services businesses general and chemical industry (experience in chemical manufacturing industry especially solvent handling)
  • Excellent analytical and technical skills
  • Working knowledge: ISO requirements desired (ISO 45001, ISO 9001, ISO 14001), Indian occupational health and safety legislation mandatory
  • Willingness to travel regularly (estimated at 20% of time across India)
  • MS Office usage
