As an Electrical Technician, you’ll play a key role in the inspection, testing, maintenance, and commissioning of substation and network equipment. You’ll work across a variety of primary and secondary assets, ensuring quality, safety, and reliability for the networks we support. This position requires strong technical ability, a mature and safety-focused approach, and the capability to work independently as well as guide others when required.
Job Responsibility:
Carry out testing and inspection of substation equipment with minimal supervision
Complete primary and secondary testing and prepare accurate, high-quality test reports
Install cabling, accessories, fixtures, and equipment in line with design and manufacturer requirements
Identify variations and support cost recovery processes
Plan, price, scope, and organise materials for scheduled works
Maintain tools, equipment, and on-site stores to a safe and operational standard
Supervise small teams on routine maintenance and smaller capital works
Liaise with contractors, other trades, and internal teams to ensure smooth project delivery
Support quality assurance across all assigned projects
Maintain accurate documentation and comply with company procedures
Actively participate in toolbox talks, pre-starts, and incident reporting
Conduct risk assessments and ensure work areas remain safe
Maintain compliance with HSE requirements, equipment registers, and relevant licenses
Take responsibility for your own safety and support your team in doing the same
Requirements:
At least 6 years’ experience in the electrical industry, including 2+ years in substations
Experience at ports of Auckland and vector tunnel
Vector switching competency
EWRB-registered Electrician or Electrical Fitter (or equivalent recognised licence)
Current full NZ driver’s licence
Experience reading and interpreting substation drawings
Ability to diagnose and resolve substation faults
Proficient with testing equipment such as HV Megger, Ductor, Kelman tester, Multi-function testers, Battery impedance/discharge testers, Temperature calibration equipment
Experience with Omicron or similar advanced test instruments
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Good computer literacy
A proactive, positive approach to HSE
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong relationship-building skills
