Under direct supervision, sets up, operates, and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment. Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts in making repairs to metal parts as well as for experimental apparatus or prototype equipment. Work is routine and machining is performed to ordinary tolerances.
Job Responsibility:
Sets up, operates, and adjusts various types of conventional or automatic machines including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and other precision equipment
Works from drawings and written instructions to create replacement and new parts
Machines parts to specifications, using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders
Measures, examines or tests completed units to check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications
Calculates dimensions or tolerances
Monitors the feed and speed of machines
Maintains machine tools in proper operational condition
Studies sample parts, blueprints, drawings, or engineering information to determine methods or sequences of operations
Uses various bandsaws, cutoff wheels, table saws, and pedestal grinders
Lays out, measures and marks metal stock
Fits and assembles parts to make or repair machine tools
Sets up or operates metalworking, brazing, heat-treating, welding, or cutting equipment
Installs repaired parts into equipment or install new equipment
Checks work pieces to ensure proper lubrication or cooling
Designs fixtures, tooling, or experimental parts
Supports metalworking projects from planning and fabrication through assembly, inspection, and testing
Prepare working sketches
Tests experimental models under simulated operating conditions
Install experimental parts or assemblies
Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements:
High school diploma or GED
Knowledge of various metals and measurements used in machining processes
Knowledge of machinist, CAD and/or CAM software
Knowledge of mathematics and its application
Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods
Knowledge of monitoring gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
Ability to safely use or learn to use piranha, metal shear, and metal breaks
Must be eligible to participate in the DoD Skillbridge program
Requires manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination
Ability to lift 50 pounds or more and stand for extended periods of time
