Job Responsibility

  • Diagnose and treat a wide range of digestive system disorders in adults and potentially children (depending on the position)
  • conduct comprehensive patient histories and physical examinations
  • order and interpret diagnostic tests such as endoscopies, X-rays, CT scans and blood tests
  • perform endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat digestive conditions (depending on the scope of practice)
  • develop and implement treatment plans
  • manage chronic digestive conditions and provide ongoing patient care
  • collaborate with surgeons, radiologists and other specialists when needed to ensure coordinated care
  • educate patients on digestive health and disease prevention
  • maintain accurate and complete medical records for all patients
  • stay current on the latest advancements in gastroenterology through continuing education

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school
  • residency training program in internal medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
  • fellowship training in gastroenterology (may be preferred depending on the position)
  • board certification in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or the AOA
  • active and unrestricted medical license in Texas
  • at least one year of experience providing gastroenterology care in a clinical or hospital setting
