An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist to join a specialist Community Team for Adults with Learning Disabilities in Greater London. This post is one of two consultant positions within a well-established, integrated, multidisciplinary service that provides specialist psychiatric care for adults with learning disabilities. The vacancy has arisen due to a career break, offering an excellent opportunity to join an innovative and highly supportive team. The service delivers community-based, person-centred care, with a strong emphasis on preventing hospital admissions, supporting people with complex needs, improving physical health outcomes, and promoting independence.
Job Responsibility
Provide consultant psychiatric care for adults with learning disabilities in community settings
Assess and manage complex mental illness, neurodevelopmental disorders, behavioural concerns, and dementia
Conduct outpatient reviews, clinics, and home visits
Support Dynamic Support Register patients at risk of admission or placement breakdown
Lead treatment planning, medication management, risk assessments, and ongoing monitoring
Support transitions from CAMHS to adult services
Contribute to admission avoidance and discharge planning
Work collaboratively within a large integrated MDT including psychiatry, psychology, nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and social care
Provide senior medical leadership and clinical decision-making
Participate in partnership work with commissioners, local authority teams, primary care, voluntary organisations, and carers
Supervise junior doctors, including higher trainees, core trainees, and foundation doctors
Support undergraduate teaching for medical students
Participate in postgraduate psychiatry education and MRCPsych training
Participate in appraisal, CPD, audit, governance meetings, and quality improvement projects
Lead service development initiatives
Contribute to Learning Disability Mortality Review (LeDeR) and NHS Long Term Plan priorities
Requirements
MBBS / MBChB or equivalent qualification
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise
Minimum 1 year NHS experience
GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT/CESR
MRCPsych or equivalent higher psychiatric qualification
Section 12 Approval
Approved Clinician status
Experience in Learning Disability Psychiatry at Consultant or ST6+ level
Experience in acute and community psychiatric settings
Strong understanding of Mental Health Act, MCA, safeguarding
Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Management training/leadership skills
Experience teaching multidisciplinary groups
Experience in service development
