An exciting opportunity has arisen for three Locum Consultant General Surgeons to join a large and evolving surgical service in the East of England on a 12-month fixed-term basis. These replacement posts offer the opportunity to work within an integrated surgical network, delivering a broad range of elective, emergency, and gastrointestinal surgical services while contributing to ongoing service transformation and quality improvement initiatives.
Job Responsibility
Deliver high-quality elective and emergency General Surgery services across the surgical network
Participate in a 1 in 9 General Surgery on-call rota providing emergency surgical cover
Manage patients across inpatient, outpatient, theatre, and emergency care settings
Undertake a broad range of general and laparoscopic surgical procedures
Deliver day-case and high-volume low-complexity (HVLC) surgical services
Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, endoscopy, multidisciplinary meetings, and administrative duties
Contribute actively to clinical governance, audit, risk management, quality improvement, appraisal, and service development initiatives
Support the development and implementation of clinical pathways and best-practice standards
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred care
Participate in teaching, training, mentoring, and supervision of junior medical staff
Serve as a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and contribute to departmental activities
Requirements
Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise
Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at the time of interview
Appropriate higher surgical qualification
ATLS Provider certification
Broad training and experience in General Surgery
Training and experience in laparoscopic General Surgery
Experience performing a hot cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis
Training and expertise in children's safeguarding
Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Commitment to teaching, training, and service development
Flexible approach to working practices and hours
Full driving licence
Ability to reside within the required on-call travel distance
Nice to have
Higher degree, such as MD, MS, or PhD
Educational or supervisory training qualification
Management skills or leadership training
Post-CCT fellowship experience
Research experience, including governance and grant applications
Publications within a specialist area of interest
Conference presentations and committee membership experience
