An opportunity is available for a Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist & General Physician to join a well-established medical service delivering high-quality Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine care. The role combines elective and emergency responsibilities, including outpatient activity, inpatient ward care, endoscopy services, and participation in the acute medical on-call rota within a supportive multidisciplinary environment.
Job Responsibility:
Provide consultant-level care across Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine services
Deliver outpatient clinics and undertake diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy sessions
Conduct inpatient ward rounds for gastroenterology and general medical patients
Participate in the acute medical take and general medical on-call rota
Ensure safe and effective patient management with timely clinical decision-making
Supervise, mentor, and support junior medical staff
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams across medical specialities
Provide specialist advice to colleagues and support integrated patient pathways
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
Participate in service development and departmental improvement activities
Maintain CPD and adhere to best practice and patient safety standards
Requirements:
Specialist registration with the Irish Medical Council (IMC) with a licence to practise
Demonstrated competency in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
Eligibility to work in Ireland
Must not have worked in Ireland within the previous 36 months
Must not have applied directly to HSE roles within the previous 24 months
Police clearance required
Consultant-level experience in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine
Ability to independently manage outpatient, inpatient, and acute medical workloads
Strong clinical leadership and multidisciplinary working skills
Experience supervising junior medical staff
Commitment to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
Strong focus on patient safety and quality of care
Excellent communication and organisational skills
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Professional, patient-centred approach to care delivery
Nice to have:
An additional higher qualification or fellowship in Gastroenterology
Evidence of ongoing CPD
Experience in high-volume endoscopy services
Involvement in service development or pathway improvement
Teaching experience for trainees and multidisciplinary staff
