Job Responsibility:
Installs, repairs and maintains all types of locks and cuts keys in accordance with diagrams and manufacturers' specifications, using hand and power tools and precision measuring instruments and equipment
Performs advanced levels of locksmith work with minimal supervision using independent judgment frequently
Answers all types of trouble calls involving locks, keys and combinations
Dismantles all types of locks to gain access to and remove defective parts
Makes keys by cutting blanks using duplicate key or key code and key cutting machines
May set up and operate lathe, mill, drill press, grinder, or other machinery to make and repair parts
Keeps records of locks and keys
May specialize in a major phase of locksmithing such as handling all combination locks or preparing master and submaster lock sets
Maintains stock of a variety of locks, parts, keys, blanks and other supplies
Keeps up with state of art through periodicals, workshops, self study, etc
Keeps machines, tools and work area in good condition
Requirements:
High School education or equivalent
2-4 years of training and experience in locksmith or related work, preferably in the department
