This is a maternity cover fixed term contract role, initially for 12 months, starting in May 2026. The role is to shine a light on the daily decisions of councils, to ensure politicians keep their promises and to break essential stories about public interest issues. The reporter will be part of a team of 165 reporters working throughout the UK to hold local authorities to account through a BBC-supported service.
Job Responsibility:
Cover the key business of Kirklees Council, as well as the political and social issues affecting its communities
Cover council meetings and key decisions in a timely manner
Build contacts, understand and explore key issues, write features and break exclusives
Requirements:
NCTJ or NQJ qualified journalist
Ideally with 100wpm shorthand skills (or be currently working towards this)
Understanding and interest in the issues of your local community
Ability to pull the stories out of local council meetings that readers want to know about
Excellent knowledge of Huddersfield and the surrounding areas
Solid understanding of the patch you will be covering
Nice to have:
Previous experience reporting on local government/councils
Good knowledge of social media and how to use it to grow and engage audience and engagement from the people in your area
