Job Description

Robert Half Legal is partnering with a third-party specialty insurance company located in downtown Chicago who is seeking to hire a Litigation Management Counsel with at least 2-3+ years of civil litigation experience to join their in-house Legal Bill Review/Audit team. This third-party specialty insurance company handles complex environmental, asbestos, and other latent type insurance claims.

Job Responsibility

  • Review and audit legal invoices from outside counsel and vendors to ensure charges are reasonable, necessary, and compliant with billing guidelines and cost-sharing agreements
  • Use electronic billing and claims systems to evaluate spend and identify trends or opportunities for improvement
  • Provide clear, well-supported feedback to law firms and internal teams regarding billing determinations
  • Analyze settlement agreements, coverage arrangements, and jurisdictional requirements to confirm billing compliance
  • Collaborate with claims leaders, co-carriers, and joint defense partners to promote consistent expense management practices
  • Help enhance and refine litigation management guidelines and audit protocols
  • Identify cost drivers and recommend practical strategies to improve predictability and control defense spend
  • Prepare executive-level summaries highlighting savings, compliance trends, and emerging risks
  • Assist in resolving billing disputes professionally and constructively while maintaining strong working relationships

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • At least 3 years of litigation or legal audit experience
  • Proven experience in civil litigation and legal billing processes
  • Proficiency in interpreting legal billing entries and applying legal knowledge
  • Strong research and report writing skills are necessary

Nice to have

Prior experience handling environmental, asbestos, liability, and/or insurance claims is a huge plus
