Job Description:

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Job Responsibility:

  • Under the direction of the Manager or designate and in collaboration as a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope performs assessments, plans and provides personal care, and performs nursing procedures
  • The Licensed Practical Nurse, Full Scope operates in accordance with the competency guidelines and full scope of practice within the Standards of Practice as outlined by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, and according to agency operating policies and standards and unit specific protocols

Requirements:

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing LPN registrant
  • Perinatal positions also require (a) completion of a perinatal education program plus breastfeeding course
  • or (b) 1 year of recent (within the last 2 years) acute perinatal experience
  • Perinatal positions also require Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within the past 2 years
  • MHSU positions also require completion of additional education as outlined by BCCNM for practice where Mental Health and/or Substance Use disorders are the primary diagnosis
  • Hip and Knee Clinic positions also require two (2) years' recent, related surgical and preadmission clinic experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with residents, families, co-workers, members of the multidisciplinary team and the public
  • Deal with others effectively
  • Organize work and implement a plan of care
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice as currently required by the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, including administering medications
  • Operate related equipment
  • Physically carry out the duties of the position

  • Performs laboratory procedures (i.e. strep test, wound culture, specimen collection, etc.) using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions / infection control guidelines
  • Assists the physician/provider with procedures and surgeries such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc
  • Administers medications, under physician/provider orders, including: immunizations, antibiotics, pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, and insulin. With limitations, initiates, maintains and discontinues IV therapy
  • administering selected fluids with pre-mixed medications
  • Provides basic patient education on the performance of tasks, skills, treatment and self-care. Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times and referrals to other facilities or services. Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed
  • Communicates with physicians and other members of the health care team. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions
  • Performs advanced clinical tasks or skills such as removal of sutures and staples, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen, phlebotomy - butterfly, venous access, heel stick), EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, complex wound care, etc., with demonstrated competency and under clinical supervision
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment. Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment
