Job Description

The Legal team at Whatnot protects the platform, enables the business to move fast, and ensures compliance across a rapidly expanding global marketplace. We’re hiring a data-driven Strategy & Operations Lead to serve as the strategic and operational bridge between Legal and our Trust & Risk organization.

Job Responsibility

  • Own the strategy and operations for legal intake, triage, and escalation workflows
  • Build scalable frameworks to identify risk patterns, trends, and root causes of Trust & Risk Legal matters
  • Partner seamlessly with cross-functional with Trust & Risk, CX, and Policy to communicate and drive continuous improvements to processes and policies
  • Design and own the intake, triage, and routing framework for escalations directed to Trust & Risk Legal
  • Resolve complex escalations with a high degree of autonomy
  • Identify and collect relevant data to surface trends, determine root causes, flag policy gaps, and evaluate whether existing guidance is effective
  • Build cross-functional communications and visibility framework that drives prioritization and reduces repeat escalations
  • Own investigation and fact-development workflows for high-risk or novel issues within Trust & Risk Legal including user enforcement actions, regulatory inquiries, subpoenas, and other sensitive matters under attorney direction
  • Produce clear, defensible case memos with timelines, evidence, key unknowns, and recommended actions

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in Trust & Safety, Risk Operations, Legal Operations, Compliance, or a strategy/business operations role supporting legal or risk functions
  • Strong analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with SQL and building dashboards is required
  • Exceptional judgment and the ability to distinguish between operational, policy, and legal issues
  • Proven ability to manage intake queues, triage workflows, and optimize operational efficiency in high-volume, fast-paced environments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A self-starter who can prioritize in ambiguous situations
  • Strong project management skills
  • A builder’s mindset
  • Comfortable working on a lean team in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment
  • Experience working with or supporting legal teams is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with trust & safety enforcement, regulatory compliance, IP, fraud, or privacy is a plus

  • Annual Country Compliance Plan: Preparing, obtaining approval and successfully completing an annual compliance risk management plan, in accordance with the global template and content and presentation requirements, setting out how compliance risk will be managed within the jurisdiction and its constituent parts, and the role to be played by ICRM in order to achieve the plan. Identification of the jurisdictional requirements, accountabilities and the process ownership and monitoring and testing ownership, as well as the determination of suitable staffing, hours required and secured budget in order to achieve the state of compliance within risk appetite will be set out in the plan, which will be reviewed quarterly with the jurisdictional CCC and ICRM, as well as any applicable legal entity, as well as where required by applicable regulatory agencies. The annual country compliance plan must take into consideration the applicable compliance risk assessments and MCAs appropriate to the jurisdiction and its activities.
  • State of Compliance Reporting: Preparing quarterly, in accordance with the approved global format, and in adherence to all established requirements for the State of Compliance reporting. The State of Compliance report will be presented to the appropriate CCC, BRCC and legal entity Board or Board Audit Committee, or other such Board committee required within the jurisdiction.
  • Enhancing Governance: Providing a valued interactive program of support and compliance risk management services covering the assessment and reporting of Key Compliance Risks across products, services, functions, legal entities, service centers and the jurisdiction as a whole. Providing stakeholders with insight and practical solutions as well as credible challenge to improve the ethical control culture, and conduct risk environment. Timely reporting of significant local regulatory issues to local, overseas, regional, and global stakeholders. Same-day escalation of regulatory reports received. Maintaining on-going assessment and reporting of the State of Compliance through the relevant corporate governance committees such as country audit committee(s) and/or subsidiary board(s), country coordinating committee and business risk management committee, and other management body(ies).   • Stakeholder Support and Relationships: Developing senior management relationships, including with legal entity management focus, inclusive of non-executive directors (where they exist in the jurisdiction), and the CCO as well as product functional and entity/service center line management. Informing senior management and directors of subsidiary boards, and the country/business management of significant compliance matters that require their attention or action.   • Proven experience designing complex consumer products, with demonstrated depth in Trust & Safety, platform integrity, risk mitigation, or other high-stakes domains where user well-being is critical
  • Strong end-to-end product design skills, spanning interaction design, systems thinking, and polished UI, with the ability to simplify complexity without losing nuance
  • Comfort operating at Staff scope: you independently define problem spaces, influence strategy, and make sound design decisions amid ambiguity and competing constraints
  • Experience collaborating closely with cross-functional partners, including Engineering, Product, Legal, and Operations, and communicating clearly with stakeholders at multiple levels

  • Lead end-to-end product design for Trust & Safety initiatives, from early discovery through launch and iteration, across both user-facing safety flows and internal safety tooling that supports moderation, enforcement, and appeals
  • Bring high-level craft to all that you design, always looking for innovative ways to empower our users to connect safely on our platform
  • Translate complex Trust & Safety requirements — including policy, legal, and operational constraints — into clear, humane, and scalable product experiences that help users feel protected without feeling policed
  • Partner deeply with Product, Engineering, Research, Data, Legal, and Trust Operations to align on strategy, define success metrics, and deliver solutions that balance safety, equity, and user agency
  • Design systems and patterns for reporting, blocking, education, enforcement, and recovery that can evolve with new risk signals, regulations, and cultural contexts
  • Champion the user voice by grounding decisions in research, qualitative insights, data, and lived empathy, particularly for users from historically marginalised or vulnerable communities
  • Set the bar for design craft and decision-making at the Staff level, offering feedback, critique, and mentorship that elevate peers and strengthen a culture of Excellence and Curiosity
  • Embed AI-enabled tools and workflows into the design process — from rapid exploration and prototyping to evaluating safety signals — while advocating for responsible, transparent, and human-centred use
  • Collaborate cross-functionally, take ownership of outcomes, and adapt plans with an agile mindset as Trust & Safety needs evolve
