The Legal Counsel role plays a key part in advancing Evonik’s business objectives by shaping, negotiating, and advising on the agreements and strategies that keep a global specialty-chemicals organization moving forward. This position offers meaningful influence across Procurement and Compliance, providing direct counsel on transactions and initiatives that drive growth, efficiency, and responsible operations.
Job Responsibility:
Advise, draft, review, prepare and negotiate various commercial agreements
Serve as the primary point of legal contact for a Service Unit, Business and/or Product Line related matters and provide day-to-day legal advice and support
Support Procurement in translating business needs into contractual terms and providing interpretation on risk and obligations
Monitor, review, and update contract templates to ensure compliance with new and existing laws, regulations, and internal policies
Understand internal customer business requirements and effectively communicate the Company’s risk tolerance to ensure internal clients make informed decisions
Contribute to the development and monitoring of Evonik’s regional Compliance program, including risk assessments, employee training, and investigations
Collaborate with colleagues across the Law Department and escalate matters as appropriate to General Counsel and other in-house attorneys
Apply strong negotiation and drafting skills to internal and external contract discussions, structuring of transactions, and in the drafting and reviewing of complex commercial documents
Manage outside counsel relationships and budgets
Travel up to 10% annually, including limited international travel
Requirements:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic credentials
Active state law license in good standing (New Jersey or New York preferred)
4–7 years of experience with a major law firm, regulatory agency, or corporate legal department preferred (in-house experience would be a major plus)
Strong familiarity with purchase, supply, manufacturing, and service agreements
Experience with compliance matters and knowledge of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) preferred
Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills
Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously and collaborate across business functions
Prior experience in manufacturing, specialty chemicals, or procurement preferred
open to candidates from other industries with commercial/contracting backgrounds
Nice to have:
Experience with compliance matters and knowledge of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA)
