Job Description

Marriott operates and franchises hotels and licenses vacation ownership resorts and branded residential properties globally. Marriott’s Law Department provides legal support, advice and counsel to Marriott’s internal clients. The Global Compliance group provides strategic project leadership and legal support to attain desired results for the Company’s Ethics & Compliance program. The Legal Counsel will be a member of the Global Compliance group at Marriott’s corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. One of Marriott’s core values is to Act with Integrity and we hold ourselves to uncompromising ethical and legal standards and business conduct. The attorney in this role will help support Marriott’s global anti-corruption compliance program. The attorney also will play a critical role in helping to lead investigations into potential violations of Marriott’s policies, Business Conduct Guide or the law, analyzing the associated risks and root causes, and advising on remedial actions, and control or program enhancements, as appropriate. The Legal Counsel will report to and directly support the Vice President & Senior Legal Counsel, Global Compliance.

Job Responsibility

  • Contribute to Marriott’s global anti-corruption program by conducting risk assessments and helping to develop risk mitigation strategies
  • Support investigations into allegations of misconduct related to key risk areas as identified by the Global Compliance team and help manage Marriott’s investigations governance program and whistleblower hotline (Marriott’s Business Integrity Line)
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders related to global compliance matters
  • Support the development, drafting, and maintenance of policies, standards and procedures and work cross-functionally with stakeholders to integrate these policy requirements into global operations
  • Support presentations and trainings on anticorruption and broader ethics and legal compliance topics
  • Support the strong coordination, cooperation and mutual support between the Law Department and Internal Audit, Finance, Internal Investigations, Government Affairs, Human Resources, and the regional Ethics and Compliance Continent Councils
  • Support the response to government investigations or queries as appropriate and/or required

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years’ legal experience in a role related to anti-corruption laws, investigations or supporting a global ethics and compliance program
  • Excellent academic records with a law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Bar and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills

Nice to have

  • Experience interacting with government agencies having jurisdiction over compliance risk areas
  • Experience providing advice and counsel on compliance matters with a focus on individual integrity and principled business conduct
  • Experience leading cross-border investigations into ethics and compliance matters
  • Proficient with data analytics and visualization (e.g., PowerBI)
