A small, highly respected law firm with offices in Oakland and Washington, DC is seeking a to support the team on an ongoing contract basis. The firm is looking for a well‑rounded legal support professional who can flex across litigation and investigative support depending on experience and capability. This position is hybrid, with Wednesdays onsite in the Oakland office and additional in‑office time during onboarding, filings, or attorney collaboration. There may be overlap and cross‑training prior to the current employee's leave at the end of May. The firm’s work is highly confidential and frequently involves whistleblower and investigative matters.
Job Responsibility:
Support California state court filings, including formatting, preparation, and submission when required
Assist with document review, organization, and management of large or sensitive files
Prepare materials for attorney interviews, meetings, and presentations
Review pleadings, ensure compliance with court rules, and assist with brief or exhibit preparation
Provide general litigation paralegal support, including cite checking, formatting, and filing assistance (including amicus briefs)
Take detailed notes, track next steps, and support case coordination across offices
Serve as a reliable Oakland-based resource for filings, collaboration, and in‑person needs
Handle highly confidential and whistleblower-related matters with discretion and professionalism
Requirements:
Prior exposure to California state court filings (Alameda County experience a plus)
Background as a paralegal, legal assistant, legal secretary, or similar legal support role
Experience in government, public-sector, or investigative work is a plus, not a requirement
Detail-oriented, dependable, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Comfortable in a hybrid environment and managing sensitive information
Interest in investigative, whistleblower, or impact-driven legal work is a plus
Nice to have:
