Legal Aid Managing Attorney

Job Description

CLA seeks a Managing Attorney (MA) to oversee both its Greenfield and Northampton offices, or potentially two separate MAs who will each cover one of those offices. The decision to hire one or two MAs will depend on the qualifications of the candidates, the size of the caseload they may handle, and their ability to meet other work duties. Each of those offices has between 7 and 10 staff members who are a mix of receptionists, advocates, and attorneys.

Job Responsibility

  • Oversee both its Greenfield and Northampton offices
  • Help with office administration and management, including conducting regular staff meetings
  • participating with other supervisors in the writing of annual performance reviews of staff
  • coordinating appropriate trainings and wellness activities and providing support for staff
  • working on outreach projects with staff
  • and assisting in the handling of issues arising with the physical plant
  • Act as the face of the organization in Hampshire and/or Franklin Counties, including regularly attending bar functions, funder meetings, agency get-togethers, and other community events
  • Assist with fundraising initiatives and grant-acquisition, writing, and reporting activities
  • May also handle a caseload in one or more of CLA’s practice areas, commensurate with their administrative duties

Requirements

  • Must be an attorney who is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or eligible for admission to the Mass. bar at the time of hiring
  • Experience working with low-income populations
  • the ability to relate effectively to a diverse staff and clientele
  • and strong supervision and communication skills
  • Experience in management, administration, development, or leadership in a non-profit legal or human services program strongly preferred
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Hampshire and/or Franklin Counties and to attend meetings outside normal business hours on occasion
  • Strong preference for candidates living in or willing to relocate to Hampshire or Franklin County
  • Must have a proven track record of collaborating effectively, being a team player, and an openness to supervision and learning from others
  • Strong public speaking skills, including experience conducting community outreach and trainings, and vision for enhancing CLA’s ties to the community
