The University of Manchester History Department invites applications for a Lectureship in Modern British History, post-1800. This appointment will be within a highly successful Department ranked 5th in REF 2021 (GPA 3.5) which has a profile of nearly fifty internationally acclaimed researchers and teachers and a thriving community of postdoctoral, postgraduate and undergraduate students. Manchester historians have a strong record of attracting external research funding, and currently direct or participate in several major ERC, ESRC and AHRC projects, as well as awards from funding bodies such as the Wellcome and Leverhulme Trusts. The new colleague will take responsibility for research and teaching among a group of c. ten modern British historians whose extensive publications and major funded projects range from urban piety, gender and the industrial revolution, intellectual history, histories of conservatism, crime and emigration, urban history and consumption, histories of sexuality, humanitarianism and disability through to histories of Black Britons, and histories of extinction. The new lecturer will make key contributions to furthering excellence in teaching and research of Modern British History nationally and globally, as well as within the Faculty of Humanities at Manchester.
