Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking a Lecturer in History of Art to join our dynamic, research-led art history team at the School of Historical Studies in Autumn 2026.
Job Responsibility:
Contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in history of art and history of art with curating
Develop your own research-led Option Modules at levels 6 and 7
Have the capability to set-up an undergraduate work-placement module, liaising with external partners
Contribute to the research culture and profile of the School of Historical Studies as well as the subject area
Teaching hours will vary from 6pm - 9pm, Monday to Friday
Daytime meeting attendance online and in-person is required
Requirements:
Art historian specialising in the modern period (1800 onwards)
Track record of teaching and research
Experience of working with cultural organisations would be welcome
Published research on questions related to race and legacies of colonialism, and their contemporary impact on the discipline would be especially welcome
Proven experience as a researcher with a publication record
Proven experience as a lecturer, supervisor and mentor to students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds
Proven experience as an effective administrator
Proven experience as a proactive team player
Nice to have:
Experience of working with cultural organisations
Published research on questions related to race and legacies of colonialism, and their contemporary impact on the discipline
