Job Description

You’ll work closely with pupils who have a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and additional learning needs. Through one-to-one and small group support, you’ll help create a safe, nurturing environment where every student feels understood, supported, and empowered. This role also includes outreach work, so you’ll need to be adaptable, proactive, and confident working in a variety of settings.

Job Responsibility

  • Provide tailored one-to-one and small group support
  • Help pupils access learning in ways that suit their individual needs
  • Support emotional regulation and encourage positive behaviour
  • Implement behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques
  • Foster confidence, independence, and social skills
  • Assist in planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons
  • Adapt resources to meet diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Support vocational, practical, and outdoor learning activities
  • Monitor and record progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, particularly those with trauma or disrupted education
  • Support during transitions and less structured parts of the day
  • Uphold safeguarding, health & safety, and school policies at all times
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and external professionals

Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEN (especially in alternative or specialist settings)
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Confident managing challenging behaviour in a positive and safe way
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Passionate about inclusion, wellbeing, and making a difference
  • Driving Licence: Essential (outreach work involved)

Nice to have

  • Training or experience in SEMH, ASD, or trauma-informed practice
  • Relevant qualifications (Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, CACHE, or similar)
  • Experience within an Alternative Provision setting
