Job Responsibility

  • Deliver expert scrub care across all surgical specialities on a day-case basis, acting as a general lead scrub practitioner with particular expertise in Cardiac, Urological, and Laparoscopic surgery.
  • Ensure instruments, implants, and consumables are prepared, checked, and available for each list
  • anticipate the surgical team’s needs throughout every procedure.
  • Maintain a strict aseptic technique and sterile field
  • perform WHO Surgical Safety Checklist requirements and all swab, instrument, and needle counts
  • escalate discrepancies immediately.
  • Assist with patient positioning, draping, and skin preparation
  • complete intraoperative documentation and hand over to recovery in a structured, safe manner.
  • Serve as the named clinical lead for Cardiac, Urological, and Laparoscopic services
  • maintain and develop speciality-specific instrument sets, implant inventories, and equipment requirements.
  • Liaise with surgeons, suppliers, and representatives to ensure correct implant systems, specialist equipment, and laparoscopic stack configurations are available for each list.
  • Lead scrub competency development and training for junior staff and students
  • contribute to service development and quality improvement within assigned specialities.
  • Supervise and lead the scrub team day-to-day
  • support the Theatre Manager with staff deployment, rostering, and annual leave
  • deputise in their absence.
  • Mentor junior practitioners, student ODPs, student nurses, and theatre support workers
  • contribute to appraisals and individual learning plans.
  • Induct new staff and visiting clinicians to emergency equipment, scrub protocols, and operational procedures

Requirements

  • Current registration with the HCPC as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) or with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (RGN) with scrub/perioperative experience
  • Ongoing CPD in line with HCPC or NMC revalidation requirements, with a focus on scrub and perioperative practice
  • Evidence of speciality training in Cardiac, Urological, and/or Laparoscopic scrub
  • Minimum 3 years post-registration experience in a scrub role across multiple surgical specialities
  • Previous senior or lead scrub role
  • Experience working within a day-case theatre environment
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior scrub practitioners or students
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and technique across all main surgical specialities
  • Sound understanding of aseptic technique, IPC principles, and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist requirements
  • Competent with electronic systems for incident reporting, equipment checks, and training records
