We are looking for a Lead Piping and Plant Layout Engineer to join our team in Opfikon, Zurich, Switzerland. You will lead our Piping Engineering & Plant Layout Team, ensuring delivery on all project requirements in a fit-for-purpose manner globally. This includes specifications and design, contractor management, innovation and cost optimization, interface management, regulatory and stakeholder awareness, documentation and knowledge management, and cold-weather and constructability considerations. The role is based in Opfikon, Zurich, with a hybrid work setup requiring at least three days onsite per week, and up to 60% travel including extended site presence in Alberta, Canada.
Job Responsibility
Develop and lead the Piping Engineering & Plant Layout Team
Ensure owner requirements are clearly defined, documented, and communicated to contractors, and validate design assumptions against operability, safety, and applicable regulatory expectations
Define piping and plant layouts suitable for local and regional execution
Review and approve contractor submissions, enforce owner requirements, provide technical clarifications, and ensure adherence to schedule, quality, safety, and operability
Develop innovative engineering solutions to identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or safety
Assure strong integration with process, civil, electrical, mechanical and O&M disciplines to achieve seamless and optimized designs
Support alignment of piping and plant layout scope assumptions with local permitting and application needs
Maintain thorough records of technical decisions, design bases, vendor information, and lessons learned
Incorporate cold-weather climate conditions into piping and plant layout design and execution planning
Requirements
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or any related discipline
At least 10 years of experience in process plants, preferably in cold weather climates, as a piping and plant layout engineer, with understanding of current standards and directives in mechanical, piping and civil engineering
Hands-on involvement in at least one full-cycle project in the chemical, petrochemical, or renewables industry, covering all phases from FEED and detailed design to construction, commissioning and start-up—preferably in cold-weather or remote/seasonally constrained execution environments
Precise, adaptable, and reliable, with a proactive and solution-oriented approach
Confident in presenting to executive audiences and EPC contractors, translating technical content into clear, actionable information
Fluent in English
Ready to travel up to 60% of your time (including extended site presence in Alberta, Canada during peak design, engineering, construction and commissioning periods)
