MemorialCare Heart & Vascular Institute is seeking to add a board-certified Physician Assistant (PA) to its cardiothoracic surgery practice at MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center in beautiful southern California. The selected PA will be employed by MemorialCare Medical Group, a for-profit multi-specialty group practice affiliated with MemorialCare Medical Foundation. The Lead Physician Assistant (PA) for Cardiothoracic Surgery provides leadership, direction, and guidance to Physician Assistants while delivering specialty collaborative patient management under the direction of the cardiac surgeons. The Lead PA implements and maintains PA requirements both programmatic and competency specific to Cardiac Surgery Programs. This position is clinically responsible and accountable for the application of the PA process, providing clinical guidance to the team, research involvement, consultative services, inter and intradepartmental liaison, education, leadership, and patient care management across the healthcare continuum from preventative care through discharge.
Job Responsibility:
Support and provide coordination and direction to physician assistants and other staff through proactive assistance
Direct, educate, and mentor staff in developing sound clinical judgment to promote positive patient outcomes
Serve as a preceptor by mentoring PAs in care delivery, resource utilization, and time management
Function as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate
Partner with department leadership to manage daily work schedules, patient load assignments, and PA call schedules
Implement department strategies to optimize efficiency through timely documentation, length of stay management, and other specified strategies
Manage resource allocation based on patient needs and staff capabilities
Coordinate clinical rotations for student Physician Assistants
Collaborate in annual evaluation processes with physicians and management
Develop and supervise program development
Participate in hospital committees that determine clinical policy and practice standards
Engage in hospital-wide Performance Improvement Programs
Lead training and onboarding of new PAs
Ensure competencies of existing PAs
Review and provide input on CT Surgery policies and procedures
Perform and document history and physical examinations
Write appropriate admission orders
Review abnormal findings and coordinate additional testing or consultations
Document progress notes
Evaluate unstable patients and initiate emergency management
Collaborate on surgical case scheduling
Assist with STS data collection
Provide patient education
First and second assist in operating room procedures
Perform saphenous vein and radial artery harvest, including EVH
Place indwelling catheters
Assist in patient preparation
Perform delegated surgical closure procedures
Monitor and coordinate patient transport
Write and manage postoperative orders
Monitor early postoperative period
Initiate treatment of postoperative complications
Communicate effectively with attending surgeons
Perform daily patient assessments
Complete discharge summaries
Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program required
Minimum 5 years of Cardiothoracic Surgery experience required
Proficiency in EVH, including saphenous vein and radial artery harvest
Demonstrated expertise in first assisting and bedside management of Cardiac Surgery patients
Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities
Current, unrestricted Physician Assistant license issued by the State of CA
Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
Current ACLS and BLS certification
Active DEA license
