Job Responsibility
Deliver expert scrub care across orthopaedic lists on a day-case basis, acting as lead scrub practitioner for partial and total joint arthroplasty, including Oxford Partial Knee Replacement
Demonstrate advanced working knowledge of Medacta, Zimmer Biomet, and Stryker implant systems
ensure correct set preparation, implant sizing support, and inventory management for every list
Ensure instruments, implants, and consumables are prepared, checked, and available
anticipate the surgical team’s needs throughout every procedure
Maintain strict aseptic technique and sterile field
perform WHO Surgical Safety Checklist requirements and all swab, instrument, and needle counts
escalate discrepancies immediately
Assist with patient positioning, draping, and skin preparation
complete intraoperative documentation and hand over to recovery in a structured, safe manner
Serve as the named clinical lead for orthopaedic arthroplasty services, maintaining and developing speciality-specific instrument sets, implant inventories, and equipment requirements
Liaise with medical supplier representatives to keep abreast of product developments, facilitate staff training, and ensure correct implant systems are available for each list
Lead scrub competency development and training for junior staff and students within the orthopaedic speciality
Supervise and lead the orthopaedic scrub team day-to-day
support the Theatre Manager with staff deployment, rostering, and annual leave
deputise in their absence
Mentor junior practitioners, student ODPs, student nurses, and theatre support workers
contribute to appraisals and individual learning plans
Induct new staff and visiting clinicians to emergency equipment, scrub protocols, and operational procedures

Maintain orthopaedic instrument sets, power tools, and specialist implant trays
manage stock, raise orders, and coordinate planned preventative maintenance
Monitor usage and flag stock issues to the Theatre Manager
contribute to equipment replacement and capital planning as required
Requirements
Current registration with the HCPC as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) or with the NMC as a Registered Nurse (RGN) with scrub/perioperative experience
Ongoing CPD in line with HCPC or NMC revalidation requirements, with a focus on orthopaedic scrub practice
Previous senior, lead, or charge practitioner role
Minimum 3 years post-registration experience in a scrub role within orthopaedic theatre, including experience scrubbing for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA)
Proven experience scrubbing for Oxford Partial Knee Replacement (UKA) procedures
Advanced knowledge of orthopaedic anatomy, surgical techniques, and implant biomechanics
Comprehensive understanding of aseptic technique, IPC principles, and WHO Surgical Safety Checklist requirements
Ability to manage complex orthopaedic instrument trays, power tools, and implant inventory
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
Competent with electronic systems for incident reporting, equipment checks, and training records

Nice to have
Surgical First Assistant (SFA) qualification (e.g. CODP/AfPP accredited)
Teaching, assessing, or practice supervisor qualification
Demonstrable working knowledge of orthopaedic implant systems
Medacta, Zimmer Biomet, and Stryker
Experience with robotic or navigation-assisted orthopaedic surgery (e.g. Mako, Stryker Navigation, Medacta GMK Sphere)
Experience in a private hospital or independent sector environment
Knowledge of SFA scope of practice and first assisting techniques
Familiarity with CQC requirements and the professional standards of the HCPC or NMC as relevant to perioperative practice
