Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Mechanical Aerospace Engineer to join a cutting-edge aerospace and defence project. As the project moves into a critical development phase, the team is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Aerospace Engineer to take ownership of key airframe and mechanical systems and support the successful integration of the aircraft platform. As Lead Mechanical Aerospace Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, integration, and validation of the aircraft’s mechanical systems. Working closely with the Chief Engineer and multidisciplinary engineering team, you will ensure the aircraft meets demanding performance, weight, and structural requirements while supporting the integration of propulsion and electrical subsystems. This role is ideally suited to a hands-on aerospace engineer who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and bringing together advanced technologies to deliver real-world capability.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead the design and integration of mechanical and airframe systems
  • Support optimisation of airframe weight, structural integrity, and performance
  • Work closely with electrical and propulsion teams to ensure successful system integration
  • Contribute to aircraft architecture and engineering decision-making
  • Support testing and validation activities
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams and external suppliers
  • Ensure delivery against key programme milestones and performance targets

Requirements

  • 8 years + years’ experience in aerospace or defence engineering
  • Background in airframe design, mechanical systems, or aircraft structures
  • Experience working in advanced aerospace systems or defence
  • Strong understanding of aerospace mechanical design and system integration
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Eligible to obtain Australian Defence security clearance

  • Be a key founding member of the small team responsible for spacecraft systems lifecycle from design up to in-orbit validation. The team will bring the design into full production, commissioning and operations of the imaging instrument, including all phases along the way - testing, qualification, verification and iterating on necessary steps
  • Be a technical leader for design and optimization of the satellite platform and oversee manufacturing, testing and qualification campaign. Due to the nature of the project and size of the founding “tiger team”, it’s expected to actively participate in the CAD and other engineering activities
  • Working with manufacturers of the components and subsystems to ensure the right quality, alignment and performance of delivered components and mechanisms
