Job Description

Reporting to the Office Manager of Emerson Cardiovascular Associates and working under the immediate direction of the Physician(s), the Lead Cardiac Sonographer performs a wide variety of Diagnostic Cardiographic testing on patients and testing center supervision.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Certified Ultrasound program required
  • Cardiac Sonography certificate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or equivalent required
  • Minimum of two years’ experience performing and interpreting 2D, M-Mode, and Doppler Echocardiograms
  • Vascular Ultrasound experience preferred
  • BLS healthcare provider required
  • Current registration as RDCS or RCS required
  • or registry-eligible with RDCS or RCS achieved within 6 months of hire
  • Strong communication skills
  • Must be well versed in medical terminology
  • Ability to explain the purpose of the echocardiographic examination to the patient and answer patient’s questions
  • Maintains a comprehensive understanding of cardiovascular and thoracic anatomy, cardiovascular pathophysiology, hemodynamics and embryology, in order to recognize normal and abnormal cardiovascular structure, function and abnormalities of blood flow
  • Maintains knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, tissue characteristics, and measurements of blood flow
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English
  • Computer skills required
  • Ability to maintain confidential information

  • Accurately assesses and responds to life-threatening conditions
  • Adapts readily to changes in work schedule and STAT exam requests
  • Troubleshoots equipment and cooperates with service personnel in order to maintain minimal down time
  • Initiates service calls on all equipment assigned to the area
  • Accurately processes daily charges for exams and supplies upon completion of work

  • Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo issued by the ARDMS, or Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) registration issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)

  • Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures such as M-mode, 2-D, Doppler and Color Flow Doppler utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques and makes the necessary measurements required for the interpretation to obtain accurate, high quality results
  • May assist physicians in the Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs by performing echocardiograph studies to aid them in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease risk factors
  • Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities and extends the scope of the examination appropriately, deviating from standard techniques when necessary and correlating invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function
  • Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical history from the patient including cardiac related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data in order to adapt the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiograms to alleviate the probability of erroneous clinical interpretation of the echocardiogram
  • Assists in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizes probe
  • Communicates clinical findings to the appropriate staff
  • Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate
  • Acts as a resource to other staff, physicians and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures and studies to optimize patient care
