The Client is advancing its capability in Laser Powder Bed (LPBF) to meet stringent aerospace standards. The team, based at the UK Global Technology Centre, works closely with specialists across multiple disciplines and global project partners to industrialise this technology. The Laser Powder Bed Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining LPBF equipment used in the production of 3D printed components. The role ensures efficient machine setup, calibration, and operation while closely monitoring build quality, material consistency, and equipment performance. The technician also supports post-processing activities and maintains high standards of safety, cleanliness, and compliance within the workspace.
Job Responsibility
Set up and operate Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) systems, including loading metal or polymer powders and ensuring correct material handling and storage
Prepare, calibrate, and configure machines to achieve optimal print parameters, ensuring quality and production efficiency
Monitor and adjust machine settings during builds, including laser power, scan speed, and powder layer thickness
Continuously monitor build processes, identifying and resolving issues such as defects, machine malfunctions, or process deviations
Conduct visual inspections and non-destructive testing to verify part quality and dimensional accuracy
Ensure all components meet required technical specifications and tolerances
Perform routine maintenance including cleaning, software updates, and hardware inspections
Diagnose and resolve technical issues such as print failures, system errors, and mechanical faults
Document machine issues and collaborate with engineering teams to implement corrective actions
Remove components from build platforms and complete post-processing operations such as powder removal, heat treatment, and surface finishing
Ensure all parts are prepared in line with project or client specifications for onward processing or delivery
Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures relating to LPBF operations and hazardous material handling
Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment, including appropriate disposal of waste materials
Participate in safety training and actively promote safe working practices
Record operational data including machine parameters, defects, and performance metrics
Produce reports covering production runs, maintenance activity, and quality outcomes
Maintain accurate logs for calibration, maintenance, and material inventory
Collaborate with engineering and design teams to optimise build parameters, reduce material waste, and improve part quality
Requirements
Strong mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot complex systems
High attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
Basic understanding of metallurgy and material properties
Awareness of safety protocols, including hazardous material handling and laser safety
Hands-on manufacturing or component/process development experience

Craft apprenticeship, ONC/HNC, or equivalent technical qualification
