Job Responsibility

Provides support to mother/infant dyads with breastfeeding needs and lactation problems
Instructs mothers on all tasks necessary to initiate and maintain lactation
Evaluates breastfeeding oral motor mechanics of infants and milk transfer
Documents observations, assessments and recommendations
Performs tasks to ensure mother’s adherence to quality control departmental policies related to milk collection, storage and transport
Obtains information on maternal medication use and evaluates its compatibility
Attends continuing education
Attends staff meetings
Participates in Hospital Performance Improvement activities

Detect and respond to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults
Educate and engage patients in self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances
Order, perform, or interpret the results of diagnostic tests such as complete blood counts (CBCs)
Maintain timely, complete and detailed records of patients’ personal health information in the electronic medical records system and keep such information confidential in accordance with legal requirements
Keep abreast of developments in nursing, medicine and regulatory processes and payer systems such as Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, and private sources, maintaining competence in clinical practice with participation in continuing educational experiences and maintenance of Basic Life Support certification
Perform all services in compliance with the most current, accepted professional standards and the standards of the Joint Commission
