The main function of the lab technician role will be to perform a variety of routine laboratory operations to assist scientists in making qualitative and quantitative analyses of a variety of materials. The lab technician may work in one or more of the roles described below. All roles require logging samples, working in the laboratory to gather results, and recording the results consistently and accurately in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The ideal candidate would collaborate effectively with teammates to complete interdependent tasks in a timely manner and take part in troubleshooting challenges when needed.
Job Responsibility:
Execute the processing of more than 50,0000 corrosion coupon samples annually
Managing samples through their lifecycle: Sample receiving/login, acquiring photos, cleaning coupons (chemical & mechanical), determining corrosion types, measuring pit depth if present, data entry, sample data review, and authorizing reports
Preparing and stocking supplies for daily lab work
Routine laboratory cleaning
Execute the processing of Press Fabric samples
Filtration, milling, solvent extractions, and solubility studies
Working with acids/bases and some organic solvents
Operating an accelerated solvent extractor (ASE)
Maintaining equipment in operating condition and ordering supplies and service as needed
Executes the processing of solid deposits by performing a variety of gravimetric experiments
Drying, grinding, and pressing of solid samples
Operating instruments such as a gas chromatograph (GC) and accelerated solvent extractor (ASE)
Working with organic solvents
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in applied science or related field
Experience working in a chemical laboratory, preferably an analytical laboratory
Attention to detail to ensure correct sample processing
Strict adherence to SOPs in order to maintain quality of results
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced laboratory environment
Ability to work as part of a team and occasionally independently
Ability to learn from others and willingness to train others once techniques are mastered
Ability to work on your feet all day and multi-task
Understanding and practice of basic chemical and analytical techniques
