The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester is seeking an individual to provide technical, instructional, and equipment maintenance support for The Institute’s laboratories. Instructional laboratory courses include the senior design courses. The teaching and research laboratory technician will work closely under the supervision and direction of the Sr. Laboratory Engineer and course professors. Students learn fundamental laboratory skills such as working in teams and presenting technical findings. The laboratory technician will provide technical support to student teams in lab courses including senior design. The laboratory technician will also provide assistance with equipment installation and maintenance for faculty research laboratories. The laboratory technician will be a point of contact for departmental usage, maintenance and training of equipment in the Hopkins Center. They will maintain a schedule for each device to manage the use for both courses and faculty research activity. The laboratory technician will also interface with equipment vendors for the procurement of new equipment and to maintain existing equipment.
Job Responsibility:
Assist in the maintenance of Departmental Laboratories: Equipment moves and lab clean ups
Lab preparation for new faculty hires
Assist faculty with research laboratory chemical inventories
Train and assist students with running equipment, ordering parts, equipment and process design and part fabrication
Maintain laboratory equipment and inventory with readiness for laboratory courses and research labs
Disposition of equipment as needed
Provide general technical support to maintain and upgrade the undergraduate instructional laboratories and computer facilities as required
Provide technical support to both undergraduate and graduate research projects
Assist with coordinating student teams and generating presentation schedules and project reviews with external industry sponsors
Participate in providing feedback on student work such as technical and oral presentations
Generate standard operating procedures for laboratory equipment
Assist Sr. Laboratory Engineer with the maintenance of training records and equipment logs
Point contact for use, maintenance, and training for all of the measurement equipment in the Hopkins Center
Maintain relationships with Zygo, Optikos, and other relevant device vendor’s technical support teams
Create a schedule for each device, giving priority for undergraduate and graduate lab classes
Develop applications within each device software to streamline measurement set-ups and return to default settings when necessary
Assist faculty with device training of TAs and students enrolled in relevant optics courses
Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
B.S. in a STEM related field and/or technical experience in industry is required
2 years of relevant experience required
or equivalent combination of education and experience
Self-motivated problem solver with strong computer and technical skills
Candidate is expected to learn programming software
Ability to work some weekday evenings during the academic year
